The 2290 is a vehicle use tax and is filed once a year in July. It is not based on your vehicle registration date.
You have between July 1st. and August 31st. to be on time with your filing.
If you add vehicles on the road during the tax year file your 2290 and select the month of first use. Your taxes will be prorated.
Once a return has been submitted it takes about 15-20 minutes before you will get an email back from us with your Schedule 1 attached to it.
The Schedule 1 can also be found on your account by clicking on Check Submission Status or Schedule 1 Status using the desktop version of the web site.
Using the desktop version of the web site you have 4 options to pay the IRS:
- Bank account: The funds will be taken out of your account in 1-5 business days
- Mail Your Check: Print out the payment voucher we provide for you along with your check as soon as your return has been accepted.
- EFTPS– Schedule your tax payment on the IRS website as soon as your return has been accepted
- Credit Card– This is a new option. Your payment will be forwarded to the IRS within 7 days or less
If the vehicle was in use in July (first month of the new tax period) select July. Full taxes are calculated
If the vehicle went on the road for the first time during the tax period, select the month of first use. Taxes will be prorated.
July is always the first month for the new tax year for the 2290 and it expires on June 30th. the following year
(ex: July 1st. 2018-June 30th. 2019 is the current tax year)
If you are behind on your filings, our web site will allow you to file for the last two tax years (2016/2017 & 2017/2018)
What name matches your EIN number? Does that name also match the registration on your vehicle?
It’s important to know what name to file under (owner operator, incorporated, LLC, etc.)
Once a return has been accepted, we cannot make any name or address changes.
You will need to create an account on the web site. click on Register on the homepage of the web site. You will also need to have an EIN number. Social Security numbers cannot be used. If you don’t have an *EIN number you can apply for one free on the IRS.gov web site.
*All new EIN numbers have a 10-14 day wait period from the date the number was issued before the IRS will accept the return when the return is e-filed
