What Is the Form 2290 Due Date?
The annual Form 2290 due date is always August 31. Unless August 31 falls on a weekend or holiday — then the deadline moves to the next business day. That is why in some years the deadline falls after Labor Day.
What This Deadline Applies To
This deadline applies to vehicles that were on the road in July. For most truckers, this is the yearly filing you do to stay compliant and keep your registration current. The Form 2290 tax year runs from July through the following June. It does not follow the calendar year.
What If You Start Using a Truck Later in the Year?
If you put a truck on the road after July, your due date changes and taxes will be prorated. Your deadline is based on the Date of First Use — the first month you used the truck during the tax year.
Here is how that works: say you buy a truck in April. It needs some work, so you take delivery in May when that work is finished. Your first use of the truck is May. May is your “date of first use.” Your due date is then June 30 — the end of the following month. For taxes, you’ll only pay for May and June because it’s prorated. Then you’ll renew in July and pay for the full 12-month period. It’s two returns close together, but it’s not two full tax bills.
Why Filing Early Matters
A lot of people wait until the last minute to file their Form 2290. That is usually when things go wrong. As the deadline gets closer:
- Phone support lines get busier
- Mistakes are harder to fix in a rush
- Registration delays become more likely
If you file early, you have plenty of time and get your Stamped Schedule 1 without the stress.
What Happens If You Miss the Due Date?
If you miss your deadline, the IRS will add penalties and interest. It adds up faster than people expect. If you want a full breakdown of how penalties work and how to get them waived, see our article on 2290 penalties.
