What Is Form 2290?
Form 2290 is the IRS tax form used to report and pay the Heavy Highway Use Tax on heavy vehicles. If your truck weighs 55,000 pounds or more and is used on public highways, this is the form you file each year.
What Does Form 2290 Do?
Form 2290 does two things:
- It reports your vehicle information to the IRS
- It calculates the tax owed based on weight and usage
Once your return is accepted, the IRS issues a Stamped Schedule 1. That is the document you need to register your truck and stay compliant.
Where Do My 2290 Tax Dollars Go?
The taxes collected through Form 2290 go into the Highway Trust Fund. That means this money is used for:
- Building and maintaining highways
- Repairing infrastructure
- Supporting transportation projects across the country
In other words, this is one of the few taxes that goes directly back into the roads you use every day. Most of us do not look forward to paying taxes — that’s fair — but this one is at least tied directly back to the roads and infrastructure our industry depends on.
Who Needs to File Form 2290?
You are required to file if your vehicle is used on public highways and weighs 55,000 pounds or more. This applies to owner-operators, fleets, and logging vehicles (which have different rates). If that is you, filing Form 2290 is not optional.
What If You Do Not Owe Tax?
You may still need to file Form 2290 even if no tax is due. If your vehicle is driven 5,000 miles or less during the year, it is considered suspended. Agricultural vehicles have a higher threshold of 7,500 miles. In this case, you still file the form, but you do not owe tax.
When Is Form 2290 Due?
The annual Form 2290 due date is August 31 for vehicles on the road in July. If August 31 falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day. If you start using a truck later in the year, your due date depends on the Date of First Use.
How Do You File Form 2290?
You have two options: file online through an IRS-authorized e-file provider, or mail a paper return to the IRS. Most truckers e-file because it is faster and you receive your Stamped Schedule 1 much sooner.
