Form 2290 was originally created by the federal government in the 1950’s as a tax levied on truck drivers for the purpose of maintaining highways across the United States and hasn’t changed much since then. Electronic filing, otherwise known as e-filing, represents the biggest change to Form 2290 and is more centered on how a trucker files their taxes as opposed to what gets filed. But what is it? And what do you need before you can start?
There are so many ways to process your HVUT filings that simple 2290 instructions have become difficult to find. Do you e-file? Paper file? Hire a preparer? What are your choices and how can you get the best bang for your buck?
Although there are many ways to file your taxes, the hard part is not the form – it’s choosing HOW you want to file. Today, you have more choices then ever from which to choose so we’ve listed the different 2290 instructions below to assist you in making the best choice possible.

Did you think that just because a company is an IRS 2290 tax provider approved to e-file your HVUT form that they are located in the good old U.S.A? How can you find out where your IRS 2290 Tax e-file provider is located? And how can you keep your business and taxpayer information from going off shore?
Under current law, Form 2290 Heavy Use Tax filing ends after September 30, 2011. The IRS has issued a temporary regulation that postpones to November 30, 2011 the due date to file Form 2290 Heavy Use Tax for the period beginning July 1, 2011 for vehicles used during the months of July, August, and September, 2011.
There may be some delays in the opening of the 2011/2012 annual filing season for Tax Form 2290. The IRS has not yet published the final 2011/2012 Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return, nor are they accepting paper or e-filings at this time.
